Reverse description The reverse features two theatrical figures in costume — a Commedia dell'Arte-style Harlequin character at left raising a hand and a taller cloaked figure at right, both rendered in bold, expressive relief evoking the tradition of Italian theatre. The word TEATRO is inscribed in large raised letters along the right field, while the denomination L 5 appears in the lower left field. The date 1997 is inscribed in the upper left, with the Rome Mint mark R positioned immediately below.

Additional information

San Marino issues annual themed coinage sets under a rotating subject program — 1997's theme was the performing arts. This 5 Lire piece is effectively a collector issue; aluminium 5 Lire coins had long ceased to see meaningful circulation in San Marino by the late 1990s, as Italian lira inflation had rendered low-denomination coinage economically pointless. The series continued largely as a matter of institutional habit and philatelic-style demand from set collectors.
