During the Allied occupation of Italy, the American Red Cross operated a network of clubs and canteen facilities for U.S. servicemen. This scrip — informally called "snack bar" currency — was issued specifically for use within those facilities, circulating entirely outside the Italian monetary system. It was not legal tender and had no redemption value beyond the counter.
The "5 Lire Napoli" designation anchors it to the Naples operation, one of the earliest and busiest ARC installations on the Italian mainland after the September 1943 landings. These pieces were never meant to survive — disposable by design.
