Reverse description The denomination 5 / LIRE / ITALIANE is inscribed in three lines at the center of the field, enclosed within an open laurel and oak wreath tied at the base. The circular legend GOVERNO PROVVISORIO DI LOMBARDIA runs along the upper and lateral periphery, referencing the Provisional Government of Lombardy of 1848. The date 1848 appears in the exergue below the wreath, evoking the Risorgimento uprising against Austrian rule.

Additional information

Lega Nord, the separatist political party founded by Umberto Bossi in 1991, issued these pieces as a deliberate provocation — a phantom currency for a phantom state called Padania, the notional northern Italian republic the party agitated for throughout the 1990s. They were never legal tender anywhere, functioning instead as political merchandise and fundraising tokens sold at party rallies.

The X# prefix in the World Coin catalog places them squarely among fantasy and promotional issues rather than regulated coinage.
