Obverse description Right-facing bust of Pope John XXIII wearing the camauro cap and ornate embroidered papal cope, rendered in high relief with fine detail on the vestments. The effigy occupies the majority of the field, with the portrait displaying a naturalistic, slightly corpulent likeness of the pontiff. The circular legend around the periphery reads IOANNES XXIII PONT MAX, with the pontifical year AN followed by a Roman numeral appearing at the lower right. The design is the work of engraver Pietro Giampaoli.
