| Reverse description | Large numeral '5' occupies the center of the field, with the denomination 'LIRA' inscribed below and the date '1979' beneath that. A Turkish crescent and star device appears at the top of the field. The central device is framed by a wreath composed of wheat ears to the left and an olive branch to the right, tied at the base, symbolizing the FAO themes of agricultural development and food security. |

This piece was struck as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization coin program, which ran from the late 1960s through the 1980s and commissioned member states to produce specially designated coinage promoting agricultural development and food security. Turkey participated repeatedly in the series. The stainless steel composition — unusual for Turkish coinage of this weight class — was adopted partly in response to chronic metal shortages and rampant inflation that had made lower-alloy coins economically impractical to produce at face value.
