Issued to mark the hundredth anniversary of the Turkish Republic proclaimed by Mustafa Kemal on October 29, 1923, this piece belongs to a broader commemorative program that the Darphane mounted across multiple metals and denominations throughout 2023. At 134 grams and 70 millimeters, it is a cabinet piece by any measure — never intended to pass through a turnstile or a market stall.
The republic it commemorates was declared from the ruins of the Ottoman Empire following the Turkish War of Independence, with Ankara replacing Istanbul as capital in a deliberate break from imperial geography.
