The Battle of Sarıkamış, fought in the winter of 1914–15, was catastrophic for the Ottoman Third Army. Enver Pasha's decision to launch a winter offensive through the Caucasus mountains against Russian forces resulted in the loss of roughly 70,000 men — the majority to frostbite and starvation rather than combat. The engagement effectively destroyed Ottoman offensive capability on the eastern front and accelerated the sequence of events that would follow in eastern Anatolia through 1915.
This 2015 issue falls within a long-running Darphane commemorative series marking Ottoman and Turkish military engagements on their centenaries.
