| Obverse description | The Portuguese royal arms, engraved in intaglio, occupy the upper centre, flanked by elaborate guilloche rosettes and radiating lathe-work underprint in green and salmon tones. Numeral '5' counters appear in each corner within ornate cartouches, with the vertical legend CINCO LIBRAS ESTERLINAS running along each lateral border. The issuing legend, date of Beira 15 de Setembro de 1919, and two manuscript signatures appear in the lower half, above the printer's imprint BRADBURY, WILKINSON & C.ª GRAVADORES LONDRES at the foot. |

| Reverse description | The centre of the reverse is dominated by a large oval intaglio vignette enclosing a sterling pound sign interlaced with the numeral '5', inscribed CINCO LIBRAS / ESTERLINAS / OURO around the frame, with two standing birds of paradise as lateral supporters. Dense guilloche lace-work panels fill the left and right fields, each incorporating floral rosettes and numeral '5' medallions at the upper corners. The overall impression is printed in dark brown on an uncoloured ground. |
