Obverse description The State coat of arms of the People's Republic of Bulgaria occupies the central field, depicting a rampant lion within a shield, flanked by two stalks of wheat tied with a ribbon bearing the dates 681 and 1944, and surmounted by a five-pointed star. The circular legend НАРОДНА РЕПУБЛИКА БЪЛГАРИЯ runs along the upper periphery in Cyrillic. Below the arms, the denomination 5 ЛЕВА is displayed prominently, with the date 1985 to the lower left, all separated by small five-pointed stars.
