Additional information

This issue commemorates Hadzhi Dimitar and Stefan Karadzha, two Bulgarian revolutionary figures who led an armed detachment across the Danube from Romania into Ottoman-held Bulgaria in July 1868. The raid ended within weeks — Karadzha was captured and died of his wounds; Hadzhi Dimitar was killed at the Battle of Kadanitsa on Buzludzha peak. Both became martyrs of the Bulgarian national revival movement, and Hristo Botev's poem about Hadzhi Dimitar, written the same year, cemented their status in the national imagination long before any coin honored them.
