Obverse description The coat of arms of the People's Republic of Bulgaria occupies the central field, depicting a rampant lion within an oval shield, flanked by two wheat sheaves bound with a ribbon, and bearing a ribbon inscribed with the date '9 IX 1944' at the base. A five-pointed star surmounts the shield. The circular legend 'НАРОДНА РЕПУБЛИКА БЪЛГАРИЯ' runs along the upper periphery, while the denomination '5 ЛЕВА' and the date '1971' appear in the lower field. The coin's rim is bordered by a row of beads.
