Obverse description The state coat of arms of the People's Republic of Bulgaria occupies the central field, depicting a rampant lion within a shield flanked by two wheat sheaves bound with a ribbon, surmounted by a five-pointed star. The dates 681 and 1944 appear on the base of the shield, referencing the founding of the Bulgarian state and the socialist revolution respectively. The engravers' names are inscribed in small lettering at the base of the arms. The circular legend НАРОДНА РЕПУБЛИКА БЪЛГАРИЯ arcs around the upper periphery, while the denomination ПЕТ ЛЕВА and the year of issue 1973 appear in bold relief in the lower field.
