Additional information

Issued as a pattern to mark the 140th anniversary of the Romanian Academy, this piece was never released for general circulation — BNR pattern strikes from this period were produced in extremely limited numbers for archival and presentation purposes. The Romanian Academy itself was founded in 1866 under Cuza's successor government, originally as the Romanian Literary Society, and spent its early decades navigating political pressure over the standardization of the Romanian language and orthography.

Tombac, a brass alloy favored for its gold-like appearance at low cost, was a deliberate choice for commemorative patterns where visual impact mattered more than intrinsic value.
