Additional information

Issued to mark the 130th anniversary of Romanian independence from the Ottoman Empire, declared on May 9, 1877, following the Russo-Turkish War in which Romanian forces fought alongside Russian troops before turning decisively against their nominal ally to secure favorable postwar terms at the Congress of Berlin. The 1878 recognition forced Romania to cede southern Bessarabia back to Russia — independence came at a territorial cost most histories underreport.
