Grigore Vasiliu-Birlic was one of Romania's most beloved comic actors, known for his work in film and theater from the 1940s through the 1960s. This pattern piece was issued the same year Romania was finalizing its currency redenomination — on July 1, 2005, the leu was rebased at 10,000 old lei to one new leu — making commemorative and pattern issues from this transitional moment a minor collecting category in their own right.
