Obverse description Bare-headed effigy of King Carol I facing left, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair and full beard, the truncation signed KULLRICH in small capitals. The circular legend reads CAROL I REGE AL ROMANIEI, disposed around the portrait and separated from the beaded border by a narrow field. The engraving, executed by Berlin medallist Friedrich Wilhelm Kullrich, displays a naturalistic, academic portrait style characteristic of late nineteenth-century European coinage.
