Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of Prince Carol I of Romania, rendered in high relief. The engraver's name KULLRICH appears beneath the neck truncation. A beaded border runs along the outer rim. The circular legend CAROL I DOMNUL ROMANIEI is inscribed in the periphery in Latin script.

Reverse description The crowned and mantled coat of arms of Romania is centrally displayed, flanked on either side by rampant lions serving as supporters. The denomination numeral 5 and abbreviation L appear to the left and right of the shield respectively. The legend ROMANIA arcs across the upper periphery, while the Latin motto NIHIL SINE DEO is inscribed on a ribbon below the shield. The mint mark B and date appear in the lower exergual area. A beaded border frames the entire design.
