George V ruled the unified Georgian kingdom from 1299 to 1346 and earned the epithet "Mtsire" — rendered in Western sources as "the Brilliant" — for his success in expelling the Mongol Ilkhanate from Georgian territory, a feat his predecessors had failed to accomplish across nearly a century of attempts. His reign marked the last sustained period of Georgian political independence before Ottoman and Safavid pressures permanently fractured the kingdom in the sixteenth century.
The National Bank of Georgia has issued a series of commemoratives honoring medieval Georgian monarchs; this piece falls within that program.
