| Obverse description | Central field features the national emblem of the Maldives: a crescent and star device flanked by two crossed national flags on staffs, surmounted by a coconut palm tree. A ribbon scroll bearing the Arabic inscription 'Ad-Dawlat al-Maḥaldībīya' (State of the Maldives) appears below the emblem. Muhammad Fareed Didi ruled the Maldives as its last sultan, deposed in 1968 when a republic was declared by referendum — for the second time, as the islands had briefly experimented with republican government from 1953 to 1954 before reverting to the sultanate. This 1960 issue falls squarely in the middle of his reign, a period of gradual British withdrawal from the Indian Ocean and quiet administrative modernization of the atolls. The bronze alloy replaced an earlier aluminum composition for this denomination, hence the KM#45a designation distinguishing it from its predecessor.
