| Additional information |
Part of a broadly distributed commemorative series issued by Malawi depicting Soviet leaders, this piece honors Vyacheslav Molotov — the foreign minister whose name is attached to the 1939 non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany, and whose signature appears on the order authorizing the Katyn massacre of Polish officers in 1940. Molotov outlived Stalin, survived Khrushchev's de-Stalinization purges, and died in 1986 at age 96.
Malawi had no historical connection to the USSR. These pieces were produced for the international collector market by the Pobjoy Mint under license.
