The USS Missouri (BB-63) is best remembered as the site of Japan's formal surrender on September 2, 1945, making her arguably the most historically significant battleship of the twentieth century. She was decommissioned twice — once in 1955 and again in 1992 — before being preserved as a museum ship at Pearl Harbor, moored deliberately close to the USS Arizona memorial. Malawi's decision to issue this piece reflects a broader trend among small nations with no naval history minting foreign warship commemoratives purely for the collector market.
The Schön 91.2 subtype designation suggests a variant within a larger commemorative program.
