Additional information

Malawi's gold issues of the early 2000s were produced in small quantities for the collector market, not circulation — the country's economy ran on banknotes and base-metal coinage. The Reserve Bank commissioned these fractional gold pieces largely as foreign-currency earners, a practice common among smaller African nations whose bullion programs were aimed squarely at European and North American collector dealers rather than domestic use.
