Issued as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's global coin program, which ran through the 1970s and into the 1980s and recruited dozens of national mints to strike low-denomination pieces promoting agricultural development. Turkey participated repeatedly in the series. The 1980 issue appeared the same year a military coup — the third in Turkey's republican history — brought General Kenan Evren to power in September, suspending parliament and the constitution.
FAO coins from this period rarely saw meaningful circulation; most were absorbed by thematic collectors or distributed through FAO channels rather than reaching everyday commerce.
