Svenska Stenkolsaktiebolaget Spetsbergen was one of several Scandinavian mining concerns operating on the Svalbard archipelago following the 1920 Spitsbergen Treaty, which opened the islands to commercial exploitation by signatory nations while placing them under Norwegian sovereignty. The company issued its own scrip for use within its mining settlement — a closed economy where workers had no practical access to conventional banking. These notes circulated only within the company's own store and payroll system.
The "LC" suffix in the reference denotes a left counterfoil — the note retains its stub, which is the condition most examples do not survive in.
