Det norske Spitsbergensyndikat was a coal mining company operating at Advent Bay on Svalbard, and like several other Arctic mining operators of the period, it issued its own scrip for use within the settlement. Cash was impractical to maintain at that latitude, and the nearest Norwegian bank was effectively unreachable for daily transactions. The Moestue press in Kristiania — the city was renamed Oslo only in 1925 — produced the notes with a watermark, an unusual security investment for what was essentially company currency.
The syndicate was eventually absorbed into Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani, making this scrip a short-lived issue tied to a specific corporate predecessor rather than any broader monetary authority.
