Norway conducted a formal pattern trial in 1997–1998 as part of a broader review of its circulating coinage specifications. The Royal Norwegian Mint produced test pieces in multiple compositions and sizes before the final circulating 5 Krone type was confirmed. Most pattern survivors from this process remained in institutional hands — Norges Bank and the mint's own archive — with only a small number reaching private collectors through official channels.
