Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani was established in 1916 to exploit the Sverdrup coalfields on Spitsbergen, and these scrip notes were issued specifically for internal use at Longyearbyen — a company settlement so remote that Norwegian krone had little practical utility. Workers received wages partly in this scrip, redeemable only at the company store. It was a closed monetary loop by design, not oversight.

The SN28r designation indicates a remainder — unissued stock — which is the form most commonly encountered. Fully issued and cancelled examples from actual circulation at the mine are considerably harder to place.
