| Obverse description | Central field features an ornate interlaced crowned royal monogram 'LL' for Landgrave Ludwig VIII of Hesse-Darmstadt, surmounted by an elaborate princely crown. The circular legend surrounding the monogram reads '240 STUK EINE FEINE MARK', indicating the coin's fineness standard and the number of pieces struck per fine mark of silver. The coin's rim is decorated with a fine milled border. |

| Additional information |
Louis VIII died in 1768, but this 1763 issue belongs to the financial strain of the Seven Years' War's final phase, when Hesse-Darmstadt — unlike its neighbor Hesse-Kassel, which profited handsomely from subsidizing troops to Britain — found itself managing war costs with considerably less outside income. Small silver subdivisions like this kreuzerstück bore the brunt of everyday transaction demand when larger denominations were being hoarded or melted.
