Additional information

Louis-Constantin de Rohan-Guéménée became coadjutor Bishop of Strasbourg in 1756 and succeeded to the see in 1779, but the Bishopric's minting rights were already fading — Alsace had been French territory since 1648, and the bishops' monetary authority existed in an increasingly awkward legal limbo under Bourbon administration. This piece predates the cardinal's more notorious relative, Louis de Rohan, whose entanglement in the Diamond Necklace Affair of 1785 would effectively destroy the family's standing at Versailles.

Billon issues from the Strasbourg episcopate are poorly documented in terms of surviving die varieties.
