Obverse description Bare-headed right-facing laureate bust of Emperor Francis Joseph I occupies the central field, rendered in high relief with fine portraiture detail characteristic of Josef Tautenhayn's engraving style. The emperor is depicted with sideburns and a military-style collar, conveying imperial authority. A continuous circular legend surrounds the effigy, reading FRANZ JOSEPH I·V·G·G·KAISER V·OESTERREICH, denoting his title as Emperor of Austria. The legend is set in upright Roman capitals close to the coin's milled edge. The field is otherwise unadorned, with a smooth, slightly concave surface typical of mid-nineteenth-century Austrian milled coinage.
