Ugocsai Világítási Részvénytársaság — the Ugocsa Lighting Company of Nagyszőllős — was a provincial electricity utility, not a financial institution. That it issued emergency paper money in 1919 reflects the near-total collapse of the Hungarian monetary system following the First World War and the chaotic transition between imperial, republican, and Soviet administrations. Local businesses across the former Kingdom of Hungary stepped in to fill the void left by an absence of functional small-denomination currency.
Nagyszőllős (now Vynohradiv, Ukraine) fell within the disputed territory of Ugocsa County during precisely this period, changing hands politically as Hungarian Soviet Republic control waxed and waned in the region through mid-1919.
