The Konvertibilna Marka was introduced in 1998 as a direct consequence of the Dayton Agreement, pegged one-for-one to the Deutschmark to impose monetary stability on an economy shattered by four years of war. The choice of peg was partly political — Germany had been among the first nations to recognize Bosnia's independence, and anchoring to the DM gave the new currency credibility it could not have earned on its own merits.
When the euro replaced the DM in 2002, the peg transferred automatically to the euro at the inherited DM conversion rate of 1.95583 KM per euro — a fixed rate Bosnia has maintained without a formal euro adoption agreement ever since.
