| Obverse description | The central field features the coat of arms of Papua New Guinea, depicting a Raggiana Bird of Paradise displayed above a traditional kundu drum, all enclosed within an open laurel wreath tied at the base with a ribbon. The upper legend reads PAPUA NEW GUINEA in a curved arc, with the denomination 5 Kina inscribed in the lower central field. The commemorative dates 1894 and 1994 appear in the exergue, separated by a raised dot, marking the centenary of coinage in Papua New Guinea. The design is bordered by a continuous beaded inner circle. |

| Additional information |
Papua New Guinea's coinage history reaches back to the German colonial period, when New Guinea pfennig and mark issues circulated in the northeastern territory from 1894. The centenary this coin marks spans German administration, Australian mandate, Japanese occupation, and eventual independence in 1975 — a compressed and turbulent monetary history by any measure.
The Bank of Papua New Guinea was established only in 1973, just ahead of independence, making it one of the younger issuing authorities in the Pacific region.
