Obverse description The obverse features the small National Emblem of Ukraine (trident) prominently positioned in the upper field, flanked by stylized floral and rooster motifs drawn from the traditional embroidery patterns of the Sumy region. The circular legend УКРАЇНА arcs above, with the date 2002 below the emblem, while the denomination 5 ГРИВЕНЬ is inscribed in the lower field. Decorative folk-art elements frame the composition, lending the design a distinctly regional ethnographic character. The mint logotype of the National Bank of Ukraine Banknote Printing and Minting Works appears in the lower field.

Reverse description The reverse depicts, in the upper portion of the coin field, two coats of arms of Romny — one ancient and one modern — set against an elaborate baroque decorative frame. Flanking circular legends read РОМЕН to the left and РОМНИ to the right, with the inscription 1100 РОКІВ (1100 Years) prominently displayed within the central frame, commemorating the town's 1,100th anniversary. The lower portion of the field presents a panoramic architectural composition merging historic and contemporary structures of the city of Romny in low relief. The overall design is executed in a balanced, heraldic style typical of Ukrainian commemorative coinage of the period.
