Medzhybizh Fortress, straddling the confluence of the Buh and Zhvanets rivers in Khmelnytskyi Oblast, was a primary stronghold of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth's southeastern defensive line against Ottoman and Tatar incursions. The castle's strategic importance peaked in the mid-17th century during the Khmelnytsky Uprising, when it changed hands repeatedly and witnessed some of the most brutal campaigns of that conflict. It later served as a Soviet-era military installation, which paradoxically preserved much of the structure by restricting civilian access for decades.
This coin belongs to Ukraine's long-running "Fortresses and Castles" circulation commemorative series, issued in nickel brass rather than precious metal — a deliberate choice to keep these historical subjects accessible at face value.
