Additional information

Issued on the 60th anniversary of the Soviet recapture of Kyiv from German occupation in November 1943, this coin commemorates one of the Eastern Front's pivotal moments. The city had fallen in September 1941 following a encirclement that resulted in the capture of nearly 700,000 Soviet troops — at the time the largest single encirclement in military history. The liberation came after brutal urban fighting as part of the broader Dnieper offensive.

The Zahreba reference places it firmly within Ukraine's early commemorative circulation coinage program, issued in nickel brass rather than the cupro-nickel used for standard circulation — a distinction that catches many collectors off guard.
