Wolfern is a small market commune in the Steyr-Land district, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities during World War I, it issued its own emergency small change — Notgeld — to compensate for the disappearance of metal coinage from circulation. Silver and copper were being hoarded or melted for the war effort by 1916, leaving communities unable to make change for everyday transactions. The municipal stamp and the Bürgermeister's signature were the only guarantees of value.
At 40 x 28 mm, this is among the smallest format emergency issues — closer to a postage stamp than a banknote, and just as easily lost.
