Sint Maarten gained its status as a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands on 10 October 2010 — the same date the Netherlands Antilles was formally dissolved. This coin was issued under the authority of the successor central bank during the transitional period when new national symbols were still being established. The flag depicted had only been official for a matter of years when the dies were cut.
Willem-Alexander's appearance here is notable: he acceded to the throne in April 2013, meaning production timing would have required a decision on which portrait to use well before his mother's abdication was publicly confirmed.
