The Netherlands co-hosted Euro 2000 with Belgium — the first time the tournament was held across two countries simultaneously. Dutch football's relationship with major tournaments had long been complicated; the national side reached three finals before finally winning in 1988, and this coin appeared twelve years after that sole triumph, during a tournament held on home soil that ended in a semifinal penalty shootout loss to Italy.
By 2000, the guilder had roughly eighteen months left as legal tender before euro adoption rendered it obsolete.
