The Centrale Bank van Suriname was established in 1957, eight years before Surinamese guilders replaced the old Netherlands Antilles system entirely, and by the mid-1980s the bank was managing a currency under considerable strain — Suriname's economy had deteriorated sharply following the 1980 military coup led by Dési Bouterse, with foreign exchange reserves depleted and inflation accelerating. Thomas De La Rue's continued involvement as printer during this period reflected institutional inertia more than stability; offshore printing contracts require hard currency, an awkward arrangement for a government already in fiscal difficulty.
