Additional information

The Netherlands retired the guilder on January 28, 2002, when euro coins became legal tender — ending a currency with roots stretching back to the Dutch Republic of the seventeenth century. This 2005 brass piece is a collector restrike, not a circulation coin, issued to satisfy the considerable nostalgia market that emerged almost immediately after demonetization. The Dutch public's attachment to the guilder was unusually strong; surveys conducted shortly after the switchover showed the Netherlands among the highest in Europe for euro dissatisfaction.
