The FAO coin program, launched in 1968, commissioned member nations to issue coins carrying agricultural themes as part of a broader United Nations push to raise awareness of food production and rural development. Paraguay's gold participation in this program was limited and oriented toward collector markets rather than circulation — the standard 5 Guaraníes piece had long been a base-metal coin, and the gold variant existed purely as a presentation issue.
The "b" suffix in the KM reference denotes the gold composition variant, distinguished from silver and base-metal strikings of the same type. Production across the 1978–1980 window was small.
