Haiti's gourde was pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of 5 to 1 from 1919 until 1989 — a parity maintained so rigidly that the two currencies circulated interchangeably in daily commerce for decades. That peg gave this denomination an almost exact functional equivalence to one US dollar, which shaped how it was perceived, used, and worn out in circulation.

Giesecke & Devrient's Munich plant printed the P#241 series through the mid-1980s, during the final years of Jean-Claude Duvalier's government before his February 1986 exile. Notes from this window frequently show heavy wear — the 5 gourde denomination was among the most actively circulated in the country's cash economy.
