The Violet type 5 Francs ran for nearly three decades under five different signature combinations, making it one of the longer-lived small-denomination issues in Banque de France history — a span that crossed wartime inflation, the postwar franc crisis of the early 1920s, and the early tremors of the Great Depression. The sheer duration of the series means date and signature pairings matter considerably to specialists, with the Boyer & Strohl issues of 1933 representing the shortest window by far.
Romagnoli's engraving work on the obverse is worth noting — he contributed to several Banque de France commissions during this period, often in collaboration with Deloche, whose cleaner intaglio lines dominate the reverse.
