Additional information

The Democratic Republic of Congo issued a wave of novelty collector pieces in the late 1990s under the "Banque Centrale du Congo" name, targeting the international commemorative market rather than domestic circulation. These were produced by private minting contractors and saw no meaningful use as currency. The timing — coinciding with the Second Congo War, which began in 1998 — meant the country had far more pressing concerns than a brass commemorative keyed to British royalty.
