The "Union et Force" 5 francs type belongs to the Directoire period, struck under a government that was itself a provisional fix — five directors ruling by committee while France waited to see what came next. Napoleon's coup of 18 Brumaire (November 1799) ended both the Directory and production of this type simultaneously. The die varieties within this series are numerous and well-documented; the "UNION serré" (tight) designation with inner acorn above and outer acorn places this precisely within Flan's classification F#289, distinguished from the looser spacing variants by the positioning of the decorative acorns relative to the legend break.
