Piéforts are not circulation strikes and were never intended to be. The Monnaie de Paris has produced them since at least the 13th century as prestige proofs for official presentation — to dignitaries, mint officials, and later, collectors — struck at double the normal planchet thickness on carefully prepared dies. Monaco's piéforts from this period occupy a peculiar institutional niche: they carry the authority of a sovereign principality's coinage while existing entirely outside any commercial monetary function.
The KM#PE16a and PE17 designations reflect distinct emission years within the 1971–1974 window, a distinction that matters to date collectors assembling complete piéfort runs.
