Obverse description Radiate bust of the Republic facing front, flanked on each side by symbolic Republican emblems: a swallow, clasped hands, and a level. The engraver's signature E. FAROCHON appears below the bust in the lower field. The legend RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE runs along the upper periphery. The composition reflects the allegorical artistic style prevalent in the 1848 competition for a new republican coinage design.

Reverse description The denomination 5 FRANCS and date 1848 are inscribed in two lines at the center of the field, separated by a horizontal rule, and enclosed within a wreath composed of an olive branch to the left and an oak branch to the right, tied at the base. The Republican motto LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ, punctuated by five-pointed stars, runs along the outer legend in capital letters. The entire design is framed by a beaded border.
