Obverse description Central field bears the bold imperial monogram 'N' surmounted by a large imperial crown, flanked by the denomination numerals '5' to the left and 'F' to the right. The entire central device is enclosed within a double beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend reads DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, separated by pellets, running along the outer border between two concentric beaded rings. The design is of a primitive, crudely struck emergency character consistent with a siege coinage produced under wartime conditions.
