Burundi's independence from Belgian administration came in July 1962, splitting the former UN trust territory of Ruanda-Urundi into two separate nations. This coin was struck to mark that moment, issued under Mwambutsa IV, who had held the Mwami title since 1915 and would remain king until his deposition in absentia in 1966 following a coup exploited during his absence from the country.
